Chapter 13 - The Midnight Visitor

The Manhattan penthouse was quiet except for the soft, synchronized breathing of the triplets sleeping in their custom nursery down the hall. I was sitting at my mahogany desk late at night, reviewing ledger reports on my laptop, when the private elevator chimed softly.

Arthur stepped into the study, looking slightly more fatigued than usual, though his sharp eyes remained as piercing as ever. He set a thick, unlabelled brown envelope on my desk.

"What is this?" I asked, looking up.

"A peace offering from the remnants of your former mother-in-law's inner circle," Arthur said, pulling up a leather armchair. "Margaret has been trying to smuggle a message out of the correctional facility through her former family lawyer. She thinks she can bargain."

I opened the envelope. Inside were copies of old, yellowed letters and financial transcripts detailing a dark secret from the Whitmore family history—one that explained why Margaret had been so utterly ruthless about preserving the bloodline at any cost.

Thirty years ago, Raymond wasn't actually the sole heir. Margaret had systematically forced out an older sibling, burying a family scandal involving corporate theft and hidden children to secure her own son's monopoly on the family fortune.

"She thinks if she gives us this, we’ll ease up on her prison restrictions," Arthur noted, a cold smirk touching his lips. "She's desperate. She didn't realize that playing dirty is a multi-generational game, and she just handed us the keys to the final vault."

"Keep digging," I said quietly, sliding the papers back into the folder. "I don't want to bargain with a tyrant. I want unconditional surrender."
