Chapter 4 - The Gala of the Damned

The annual Whitmore Foundation Charity Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was the social event of the season. Every billionaire, senator, and socialite in the tri-state area was in attendance under the blinding flashbulbs of the paparazzi.

I arrived on the arm of Arthur Vance, draped in a midnight-blue velvet gown custom-tailored to conceal my six-month pregnancy, though my stomach was beginning to curve with undeniable prominence. My auburn hair was swept into a sharp, cascading knot, and around my neck sat the legendary Vance heirloom sapphire—a stone worth more than most houses in Greenwich.

The moment we walked through the grand arched doors, the room fell dead silent.

Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind over dry grass. Clara Whitmore? With Arthur Vance? Has the old man lost his mind?

Across the grand hall, standing beneath a crystal chandelier beside Margaret and a sparkling woman in cream silk, Raymond froze. His champagne flute stopped halfway to his mouth. His face drained of color as he stared at me, seeing not the broken, weeping woman he had tossed onto the frost a few months ago, but a vision of untouchable elegance walking with his most dangerous rival.

Margaret’s jaw tightened so hard I could see the muscles twitch beneath her perfectly powdered cheek.

Raymond abandoned his new companion instantly, cutting through the crowd with long, furious strides, his eyes burning with a mix of panic and possessive rage.

"Clara," he hissed, grabbing my wrist before Arthur’s bodyguards could step in. "What the hell are you playing at? And what are you doing with him?"
