Chapter 14 - The Unforeseen Threat

Spring transitioned into the sweltering heat of a Manhattan July. The triplets were crawling now, filling the penthouse with joyful shrieks and tiny footprints across the polished hardwood floors.
One afternoon, while Arthur was away attending a high-level emergency meeting with the board of international shipping regulators, my private security chief, Marcus, knocked urgently on my study door.
"Mrs. Whitmore, we have a security flag," Marcus said, his face tight with tension as he handed me a tablet displaying a live security feed from the lobby.
A well-dressed man in an expensive gray suit was standing at the front desk, arguing heatedly with the concierge. Even from a distance, the bone structure and arrogant posture were unmistakable.
Julian Whitmore. Raymond’s estranged uncle, who had disappeared to London two decades ago after a bitter corporate falling-out with Margaret.
"He’s not supposed to be in the country," I murmured, watching the tablet. "The federal restraining order bars any Whitmore blood relative from approaching within five hundred feet of my estate or the foundation."
"He didn't come through customs under his own name," Marcus repliedgrimly. "He flew in on a private charter from Zurich using an alias. And he’s carrying a briefcase that looks like it holds more than just legal paperwork."

The penthouse door clicked open.
