I sat on the veranda in a plush white linen chair, sipping chamomile tea while a warm spring breeze carried the scent of blooming jasmine across the lawn. The antique fountain Raymond’s grandfather had bought at auction was running again, its clear water sparkling in the morning light.

Arthur walked out onto the veranda, holding a stack of newly printed corporate charters and a fresh cup of coffee. He placed them on the glass table and looked out over the sprawling green grounds with a satisfied smile.

"The board of directors is waiting for your signature on the Asian shipping lane acquisition, Madam CEO," Arthur said playfully.

When Raymond threw my suitcase into the snow that freezing March night, he thought he was ending my life. He didn't realize he was merely clearing the board so I could take the crown.
