Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Fifth Avenue

Arthur’s penthouse on Manhattan’s Upper West Side felt less like a home and more like a museum dedicated to ambition and cold revenge. Within twenty-four hours, I found myself sitting across from a team of high-powered medical specialists Arthur had quietly dispatched to the estate.

The private ultrasound machine hummed quietly in the dimly lit study, casting ghostly grayscale blips across the monitor.

The lead obstetrician, a woman whose credentials spanned half the globe, stared at the screen, adjusted her glasses, and let out a sharp breath.

"Well, Mrs. Whitmore—or whatever surname you choose to use going forward—it appears your previous doctors were looking at the wrong horizon," she murmured, pointing a sterile plastic wand toward the flickering shadows. "You didn't just beat the odds. You shattered them."

She tapped the screen three distinct times.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

Triplets. Three identical heartbeats echoing in a room that had known nothing but the quiet, suffocating grief of five failed IVF cycles.

"They are sharing a single placenta, which means high monitoring," the doctor continued, "but they are remarkably strong. Given your stress levels tonight, we need absolute bed rest."

Arthur stood by the window, swirling a glass of amber scotch. He didn’t turn around, but his reflection in the glass showed a slow, vindictive smile spreading across his weathered face.

"Three heirs," Arthur murmured, his voice echoing in the vast room. "Not one. Three legal Whitmore grandchildren carrying the bloodline Raymond’s mother is so obsessed with preserving. Do you have any idea what that does to their corporate charter, Clara?"

I placed a trembling hand on my flat stomach, feeling a sudden, fierce surge of adrenaline replace the cold terror of the night before. "It destroys them."
