Chapter 1 - The Flight Out of the Blizzard

The Milwaukee airport terminal was a stark contrast to the freezing, chaotic chaos of the train platform I had just abandoned. My breath still hitched in the freezing air outside, but inside, the aggressive hum of industrial heaters began to thaw my numbing fingers. I clutched my heavy leather tote bag tightly against my chest, feeling the rigid, bulky edge of the manila envelope pressed safely inside. Those high-resolution photographs, captured during their clandestine weekend getaway in Chicago, were my armor. Kevin thought he had successfully banished me to a fifty-hour moving cage, reducing me to a punchline for him and Mia to share over warm wine in first class. He had no idea that the game had drastically changed.
I checked the departure board with sharp focus. A direct flight to our destination city was boarding in less than forty minutes. My hands shook slightly—not from the cold, but from a potent cocktail of adrenaline, heartbreak, and a strange, liberating thrill. I walked straight up to the ticketing counter, bypassing the long holiday lines with my priority status from an old business card, and secured a first-class seat on the upcoming flight.
"Window or aisle, ma'am?" the agent asked, scanning my ticket.

"Window," I replied smoothly, a cold smile touching my lips. "I want to watch everything burn from above."
As the plane climbed above the blanket of heavy midwestern snow, staring down at the sprawling landscape below, I pictured the exact moment Kevin would realize I was gone. He and Mia were currently lounging in their plush cabin, probably giggling over my supposed misery in the coach car, expecting a text or a panicked phone call any minute now. Let them freeze in their smug ignorance a little longer. The real reckoning was waiting at the end of the line, sitting proudly in the living room of his parents' expansive estate, where the annual family holiday gathering was already underway.
