Chapter 3 - The Envelope That Shattered the Illusion

Eleanor’s manicured fingers trembled slightly as she untied the string of the manila envelope. She had spent decades maintaining the pristine illusion of our family’s flawless social standing, treating Kevin like her golden-boy crown jewel. She pulled out the stack of glossy, high-resolution photographs, and the color drained completely from her face.

The top photo displayed Kevin and Mia wrapped in an unmistakable embrace inside a dimly lit hotel suite, their lips locked in a passionate kiss. Subsequent shots showed them sharing decadent room service breakfasts in matching robes, laughing intimately, and checking into a private suite under pseudonyms. There was no mistaking the raw, undeniable intimacy. It wasn't just a drunken mistake; it was an active, calculated, months-long affair happening right under my nose—and right under Mia’s husband’s nose, too.

"This... this has to be a sick joke," Eleanor stammered, her voice dropping to a panicked whisper as she looked around to ensure the other family members in the parlor hadn't heard. "Where did you get these? How long have you been..."

"Longer than you think," I interrupted, stepping closer so she couldn't escape my gaze. "While you were bragging at Thanksgiving about what a devoted husband Kevin is, he was busy booking weekend getaways with his brother's wife. And today? Today, they thought it would be a brilliant psychological torture test to force a pregnant woman to stand in a freezing coach car while they locked themselves away in first class."

Eleanor’s hands shook so violently that the photographs slid from her grip, scattering across the polished hardwood floor. "Kevin would never... Mia would never..."

"Open your eyes, Eleanor," I said coldly. "Your son isn't a victim of circumstance. He’s a coward. And right now, he is sitting on a speeding train with his lover, completely oblivious to the fact that his entire world is about to implode."

A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the foyer. But the silence didn't last long. From the driveway outside, the crunch of gravel heralded the arrival of a sleek black luxury sedan. David—Mia’s husband, and Kevin’s own brother—had just pulled up.
