Chapter 15 - The Unraveling

Miles away from the grand estate, Kevin’s life was spiraling rapidly into total chaos. The rundown motel room felt smaller and colder by the day. Without a dime to his name, he had been forced to take a humiliating job loading heavy freight at a local shipping warehouse—the exact kind of grueling, physical labor he had spent his entire life looking down upon.
His hands, once soft and accustomed to holding sleek golf clubs and expensive smartphone screens, were now blistered, raw, and bleeding from hauling heavy wooden crates in the freezing warehouse draft.
"Hey, Vance! Move those boxes to bay four, or you're fired!" a gruff warehouse supervisor yelled, tossing a manifest clipboard onto the metal desk.
Kevin gritted his teeth, his muscles aching with a profound, bone-deep exhaustion that sleep could never fix. As he lifted a heavy crate, the sharp edge scraped against his forearm, drawing a thin line of blood. He stopped for a second, catching his reflection in the greasy glass window of the loading dock door.
Gone was the polished, smug executive in the designer suit who had laughed on a train platform. In his place stood a broken, haggard man with dark circles under his bloodshot eyes, wearing a stained safety vest and cheap work boots.

The memory hit him with the force of a physical blow: “You can stand, you’re pregnant, so it’ll be good exercise.”
He had thought those words were the ultimate display of power. Now, standing on concrete floors for twelve agonizing hours a day just to pay for a cheap motel room, the cruel irony tore right through his chest.
