Three months later, the private maternity ward at the city's premier hospital was filled with soft pink light and the gentle, rhythmic hum of life monitors. I lay propped up against crisp white pillows, cradling a tiny, perfect baby girl wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket against my chest. Her dark, curious eyes blinked sleepily as she let out a soft, contented sigh.
The door clicked open softly, and David stepped into the room, holding a massive bouquet of fresh white lilies and a bright pink helium balloon. Eleanor followed closely behind him, her face lit up with a warm, genuine maternal smile that I had never thought possible.
"Look at her," David whispered, leaning over the bedside with tears glistening in his eyes. "She has your eyes, Emily."
