Chapter 8 - The Descent Into Coach

Dragged out of their warm, velvet-lined sanctuary, Kevin and Mia found themselves stumbling down the narrow, swaying corridors of the train, clutching their expensive luggage like pathetic refugees. The contrast hit them instantly. As they crossed the threshold into the coach cars, the warm, fragrant air of first class vanished, replaced by the sharp, biting chill of malfunctioning heaters, the smell of stale coffee, crying toddlers, and restless passengers crammed shoulder-to-shoulder on sticky vinyl seats.

"Move it, buddy!" a burly man shouted as Kevin awkwardly bumped into him with his designer duffel bag.

"This is insane! This is completely barbaric!" Mia wailed, her designer trench coat dragging across the grimy floorboards as she tried to shield her face from the harsh fluorescent lighting. "Kevin, do something! Call your mother! Call someone!"

"My phone is dead, and my cards are blocked!" Kevin snapped back, his polished composure completely shattered, revealing the pathetic coward beneath. "How the hell was I supposed to know she had copies of everything?!"

"You told me she was a doormat!" Mia shrieked, drawing angry stares from surrounding passengers who were already filming their meltdown on cracked smartphone screens. "You said she would never leave you because she had nowhere to go and a baby on the way!"

"Shut up, Mia! Just shut up!" Kevin hissed, shoving his way down the aisle until they found two cramped, broken-down seats right next to a rattling, freezing bathroom door.

As they collapsed onto the hard, uncomfortable seats, the sheer irony of the situation crashed over Kevin. Just three hours ago, he had stood in the freezing December air, looking down at his pregnant wife with a smug, mocking smile, telling her that standing for fifty hours would be "good exercise." Now, sitting in the exact freezing conditions he had condemned her to—surrounded by hostile strangers, stripped of his money, his status, and his dignity—Kevin realized the trap had snapped shut. And he was caught right in the jaws.
