Chapter 18 - The Ghost of the Past

A year had passed since the trial, transforming my life into a vibrant, sunlit reality of motherhood, career success, and genuine peace. I had officially launched my own independent interior architectural design firm, securing major corporate contracts that allowed me to build an empire entirely on my own terms.

One crisp autumn afternoon, while walking through the upscale downtown shopping district with my toddler daughter laughing happily in her stroller, a disheveled figure caught my eye from across the bustling street.

He was standing near a bus stop, wearing a faded, oversized winter coat, holding a cardboard coffee cup and shivering against the chilly wind. His hair was streaked with gray, his face deeply lined with premature aging. It was Kevin.

For a fraction of a second, our eyes locked across the busy intersection of traffic and pedestrians.

Kevin froze mid-step. He looked down at the stroller, saw the bright, healthy, beautiful little girl sitting inside, and then slowly raised his gaze to meet mine. There was no mockery in his eyes this time. No smug smiles, no dragon-smoke breath, no arrogant superiority. Just hollow, crushing regret.

I didn't slow down. I didn't stop to gloat, or yell, or acknowledge his existence. I simply tilted my chin up, gripped the handle of my daughter's stroller with absolute confidence, and walked right past him.
