Chapter 1 - The Silver Screen NameElena froze, the air vanishing from her lungs.

The name on the screen—Isabel Vargas—burned into her retina like a dying ember. Her mind reeled. How did a man riding in a sleek, anonymous luxury car, a man who radiated terrifying, untouchable authority, have her stepmother’s direct number?
The black SUV behind them roared louder, its high beams slicing through the torrential rain, painting the interior of Matthew’s car in harsh, blinding white flashes.
— Hold on, the driver muttered, throwing the transmission into a brutal manual shift. The car drifted sideways around a slick mountain bend, tires screeching against the asphalt.
Elena pressed her back against the door, clutching Matthew’s heavy, expensive coat around her shoulders. Her bare feet were caked in mud, her ankles still weeping thin lines of blood, but the physical pain was completely drowned out by the rising tide of betrayal.
— You know her, Elena whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and fierce disillusionment. You’re one of them. Another buyer. Another monster sent to finish what Isabel started.
Matthew didn’t flinch. He didn’t raise his voice. He calmly locked his phone screen, plunging the dark interior back into deep shadow, save for the strobing headlights of the chasing SUV.
— If I were one of them, Elena, Matthew said, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic register that cut straight through the chaos of the storm, — you would already be handed back across that estate line.
He leaned forward, tapping the glass partition separating the back seat from the front.
— Drop back, he instructed the driver. Let them pull alongside us.
— Sir? The driver shot a tense look in the rearview mirror.
— Do it.
The black car suddenly eased off the gas. Within seconds, the aggressive SUV lunged forward, slamming its brakes just enough to match their speed in the middle of the empty, rain-slicked highway. Through the tinted glass of the SUV, Elena could see a silhouette pressing against the passenger window—Isabel’s sharp, frantic profile, her hair plastered to her face, screaming orders at her driver.
Matthew slowly rolled down his back window.
The roar of the storm rushed in, thick with the smell of wet asphalt and ozone. Isabel’s car window rolled down in tandem, and her venomous voice pierced the night.
— Pull over! That girl is a thief! She stole family property—
Isabel stopped dead.
As the dim amber streetlamp overhead illuminated the interior of Matthew’s car, Isabel’s eyes locked onto the man sitting beside her stepdaughter. All the fury drained out of her face in a single heartbeat, replaced by a ghastly, blood-drained terror.
— Mr... Mr. Carranza? Isabel stammered, her voice suddenly high, thin, and brittle.
Elena watched, stunned, as the powerful, ruthless woman who had terrorized her entire life began to tremble like a leaf in a hurricane.

Matthew didn’t smile. His eyes were cold, dead things.
— Mrs. Vargas, Matthew said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly over the wind. — You seem to have misplaced something. Or did you honestly think my investment in your company came with a human collateral clause?
