Chapter 12 - The Shadow in the MirrorThe rain was falling again, a heavy, relentless downpour that mirrored the night Elena’s life had fractured forever.

Inside the private library of the Vargas estate, the fire crackled warmly in the grand stone hearth. Elena sat at her father’s antique mahogany desk, turning the heavy gold pocket watch over and over in her palm. The ticking sound filled the silent room.
Matthew stood by the French doors, staring out into the dark gardens where the security patrols swept their flashlights across the manicured hedges.
— You’ve been staring at that dossier for three hours, Matthew noted without turning around.
— Because the name on this final page doesn't make sense, Elena said, her voice tight with disbelief. She slid a single sheet of paper across the desk. — My uncle. Arthur’s younger brother, Julian.
Matthew turned around slowly, his brow furrowing. — Julian Vargas? He died of a heart attack six months after your father’s accident.
— That’s what Isabel told me, Elena whispered, looking up, her eyes wide with a terrifying realization. — But look at the signature on the secondary offshore account in the Zurich ledger. It wasn't a heart attack. Julian discovered that Isabel and Ambrose were planning to murder my father. He tried to blackmail them, so they poisoned him… and then staged his medical records.
Suddenly, the ambient lighting in the library flickered and died, plunging the room into total darkness save for the dying embers of the fireplace.
Elena froze. The hair on the back of her neck stood up.
A floorboard creaked in the hallway just outside the heavy library doors. Screech.
Matthew didn't hesitate. He drew his weapon in a fluid motion, moving silently toward the door, gesturing for Elena to stay back behind the heavy oak desk.
The doorknob slowly turned.
