The Vargas corporate headquarters in New York was humming with renewed life. The corrupt executives were behind bars, the stolen assets had been successfully repatriated, and Vargas Industries was officially re-established as a beacon of ethical engineering and global innovation.
Inside the grand corner office overlooking the sweeping Manhattan skyline, Elena stood by the glass wall, wearing a pristine white dress, holding a cup of black coffee.
The heavy oak door opened softly.
Matthew walked in, holding a small, official document stamped with the federal prosecutor’s seal.
— It’s done, Matthew said quietly, stopping a few feet behind her. — Isabel’s trial concluded this morning. She received consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. Ambrose and the remaining syndicate leaders will never see the outside of a maximum-security prison again.
Elena closed her eyes for a moment, letting out a breath she felt like she had been holding for five long years.
— I thought I would feel a sense of overwhelming victory, Elena murmured, turning around to face him. — But mostly, I just feel… quiet.
Matthew walked closer, stopping just inches away. His dark eyes were warm, devoid of the cold, untouchable armor he usually wore around the world.
— That’s not quiet, Elena, Matthew said softly, his fingers gently brushing against her hand. — That’s peace.
Elena looked down at the silver signet ring still hanging on the delicate chain around her neck, then up into Matthew’s eyes.
— And what about you, Matthew Carranza? You spent five years hunting ghosts. Now that they’re all gone, what do you do?
