Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of AshesThe heavy oak doors of the Vargas corporate boardroom creaked open, the sound echoing through the cavernous, glass-walled skyscraper downtown.

Elena Vargas walked in, her heels clicking against the polished marble floor with the sharp precision of a metronome. Gone was the terrified, barefoot girl shivering in a torn silver dress. Today, she wore a tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail, a cold and unyielding aura surrounding her.
Seated around the long mahogany conference table were the remaining senior executives—men who had once nodded along with Isabel’s tyrannical decisions, men who had profited off her father's engineered demise. Now, they wouldn't even meet her eyes.
At the head of the table sat Matthew Carranza, his expression impassolian, his fingers steepled in front of him.
— Welcome, Miss Vargas, stammered Robert Sterling, the chief legal counsel who had drafted the fraudulent asset transfers five years ago. — We… we didn't expect you to take the CEO seat so soon. The transition paperwork—
— Can be thrown directly into the shredder, Elena interrupted, her voice cutting through the humid tension of the room like a scalpel.
She walked past Sterling and dropped a heavy leather ledger right in front of him—the very same ledger recovered from the Zurich vault. The thud shook the water glasses on the table.
— Five years ago, my father built this company from the ground up, Elena said, leaning forward, resting her palms flat against the mahogany table as she swept her gaze across the trembling executives. — You thought that by killing him, and by trying to sell me off like livestock, you could quietly absorb his empire into your syndicate.
She turned her head slightly, locking eyes with Sterling, who had turned the color of chalk.
— But you made one critical mistake. You left the heir alive. And you forgot that every single signature, wire transfer, and backroom bribe has been meticulously recorded. Effective immediately, every executive tied to the Ambrose syndicate is fired with cause. Security is outside the door to escort you out.
Panic erupted instantly. Shouts of protest and frantic pleas filled the room, but Matthew raised a single hand. The heavy doors swung open, and federal marshals accompanied by Carranza’s private security streamed into the boardroom.
Within minutes, the room was empty of corruption.
Elena sank slowly into the leather CEO chair, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The phantom weight that had crushed her chest for half a decade finally lifted, leaving behind a sharp, brilliant clarity.

Matthew stood up from his seat, walked around the table, and placed a fresh, confidential dossier on her desk.
— The board is yours, Elena, Matthew said softly. — But there is one more loose end we need to tie up. The person who gave Isabel the blueprint to your father's car brakes five years ago hasn't been caught yet. And according to the Zurich ledger, they are still in this city.
