Chapter 1 - The Weight of a NameThe pressurized air of the cabin suddenly felt thick, heavy, and suffocating. My lungs burned as I fought the urge to grab Julie by her linen collar and force the rest of the truth out of her right there at thirty thousand feet.

Five years.

Five years of believing Naomi Ellis was just a ghost of a summer romance that ended because my world was too toxic, too bloody, and too complicated for her soft laughter and brand design sketches. I had let her go because I thought I was protecting her. I had walked away from our final, tearful argument in an Atlanta hotel room believing I had done the noble thing by keeping Moretti Holdings and its violent shadow entirely out of her orbit.

And all this time, she had been carrying a piece of me.

"She didn't know?" My voice was a low, dangerous rumble that made the businessman across the aisle shift uncomfortably in his sleep. "You expect me to believe that she hid this from me?"

Julie flinched, her hands gripping the armrests so tightly her knuckles turned translucent. "Naomi didn't hide it from you, Mr. Moretti. She hid it from the monster people say you are."

The word hung in the air between us like a physical blow. Monster.

In my world, that word was a badge of honor. It meant respect, power, and fear. It meant my enemies stayed in their lanes and my family's empire remained untouchable. But hearing it applied to me in the context of a little girl with my cleft chin and Naomi's spirit sliced right through my armor.

Beside me, Lily looked up from her sketchbook, her silver-gray eyes—my eyes—wide with innocent curiosity.

"Are you angry, mister?" she asked, tilting her head. "My mommy says angry men have storms in their faces. You have a big storm right now."

My expression softened instantly, a reflex I didn't even know I possessed. I forced a tight, controlled smile, my fingers brushing a stray dark curl away from her forehead. The silkiness of her hair was identical to Naomi’s.

"No storm, Lily," I lied smoothly, my gaze snapping back to Julie. "Just... turbulence. Julie, we are going to have a very long conversation the second those landing gear hit the tarmac at JFK. And if you try to slip away in the terminal, I will have every exit sealed before you reach the baggage claim."

Julie swallowed hard, knowing full well I wasn't making an empty threat.
