Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and the BloodlineWithin minutes, the loft was secured. Marcus swept the perimeter, confirming Viktor’s men were either neutralized or fleeing down the fire escape. Paramedics and cleanup crews would be here soon, but for now, the smoke was clearing.

I walked slowly across the shattered hardwood floor, dropping my empty pistol onto a table.
Naomi was kneeling on the floor, holding Lily tight against her chest, rocking back and forth as silent tears streamed down her cheeks. Julie was sitting nearby, hyperventilating into her hands, completely in shock.
I dropped to my knees in front of Naomi, ignoring the glass fragments pressing into my trousers.
"Naomi," I whispered, reaching out with a trembling hand to touch her cheek.
She flinched, but didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned into my palm, her warm skin grounding me in a reality I barely deserved.
"You brought a war to my doorstep, Dante," she choked out, her voice breaking. "Just like I knew you would."
"I ended it," I corrected her gently, my thumb brushing away a tear from her cheek. "Viktor is gone. His entire network goes down tonight. You and Lily will never have to look over your shoulder again. I swear it on my life."
Naomi looked down at Lily, who was rubbing her eyes sleepily against her mother's shoulder, completely unfazed by the carnage around her.
"She has your eyes," Naomi whispered, a bitter-sweet smile touching her lips. "I tried so hard to deny it every time I looked in the mirror. But every time she asked a hard question or stared someone down with that terrifying Moretti intensity, I knew I couldn't hide you forever."
"You should have told me," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "We could have protected her together."

Naomi looked up, her green eyes piercing straight through my soul. "You have an empire built on blood, Dante. Can you walk away from it? Can you leave the darkness behind to be the father she deserves?"
I looked at Lily, then back at Naomi, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight of my entire life shifting on its axis.
