Chapter 11 - Shadows in the ParkThe crisp autumn air of Central Park carried the scent of roasted chestnuts and damp earth, but my senses were hyper-tuned to the rustle of dry leaves behind us.

We had been walking for twenty minutes—Naomi, Lily, and I—enjoying a rare, quiet Saturday afternoon. Lily was skipping ahead, her pink backpack bouncing with every step as she chased a flock of pigeons near the Bethesda Terrace.

Naomi slid her gloved hand into the crook of my arm, her shoulder brushing against my coat. "You're tense," she murmured, her green eyes scanning my profile. "Even out here, you're still looking for snipers behind the oak trees."

"Old habits die hard," I replied, keeping my voice low so Lily wouldn't hear. "Viktor is gone, but the syndicate has hydra heads. When you cut off one, two more grow back. I've spent the last three months restructuring Moretti Holdings, but corporate boardrooms don't erase five years of criminal blood debt overnight."

Naomi stopped walking, forcing me to turn and face her. The golden afternoon light caught the dark curls framing her face, softening the fierce independence that had kept her hiding from me for half a decade.

"You promised me we were safe," she said, her voice steady, though a flicker of fear danced in her eyes.

"We are safe," I said firmly, cupping her cheek with my free hand. "Because I have eyes everywhere now. Marcus and his team are sweeping every perimeter within a half-mile radius."

Even as the words left my mouth, my peripheral vision caught a flash of dark fabric near the stone archway. A man in a charcoal trench coat stood motionless among the weekend tourists, holding a newspaper that wasn't being read. His eyes were locked directly on Lily.

My blood turned to ice.
