Chapter 2 - The Terminal AmbushThe moment the Boeing 777 kissed the runway at JFK, the adrenaline in my veins spiked to a level I hadn't felt since a cartel warehouse in Queens went up in flames three years ago.

I didn't wait for the polite rows ahead of us to deplane. I stood up immediately, grabbing my tailored wool coat and turning to Julie, who was hastily unbuckling Lily’s seatbelt.

"Give me her backpack," I instructed, my tone absolute.

"Dante, please—" Julie started, panic flashing across her face.

"Don't test me, Julie. You brought my daughter across state lines, hidden away in Brooklyn or wherever you've been stashing her, while I spent half a decade wondering if Naomi even remembered my name. We are getting into my car, and you are taking me to her."

Lily clung to her stuffed rabbit, watching the adults with wide-eyed fascination. "Are we going to see Mommy now?"

My chest constricted. "Yes, sweetie. We're going to see your mommy."

As we walked down the jet bridge and into the chaotic sprawl of Terminal 4, my head of security, Marcus, was already waiting past customs with two black-suited operatives. His eyes widened slightly when he saw me walking side-by-side with a woman he didn't recognize and a four-year-old girl holding my hand with absolute, unearned trust.

Marcus stepped forward, his hand hovering near his jacket. "Boss. Everything okay?"

"Clear a path to the private exit," I ordered, my eyes never leaving Julie’s terrified face. "And pull up the file on Naomi Ellis. Every address, every tax record, every bank statement from the last sixty months. I want it all by the time I reach the vehicle."

"Right away, sir."

Julie tried to dig her heels in near the baggage carousel. "Dante, Naomi has built a life. She’s safe. You walking back into her world like a wrecking ball is going to destroy everything she’s worked for."

I stopped dead in my tracks, turning so sharply that Julie nearly crashed into my chest. Lily instinctively hid behind my leg, clutching my trousers.

"Destroy?" I hissed, leaning down so only Julie could hear the venom in my words. "She kept my child a secret from me. She stole my right to be a father. You talk to me about destruction? Get in the car, Julie. Before I lose what little patience I have left."
