Chapter 5 - The Uninvited GuestBefore Naomi could retort, a sharp, heavy knock echoed against the heavy wooden loft door downstairs.

We all froze.
Julie gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "No... no, they couldn't have followed us."
My internal alarms—honed by a decade of gang warfare and corporate bloodbaths—screamed to life. I spun around, my hand instinctively sliding beneath my jacket to grip the polished handle of my Sig Sauer P229.
"Who knows you were flying in today, Julie?" I demanded, my voice dropping into the lethal register I used when dealing with traitors.
"N-nobody!" Julie stammered, backing toward the corner. "Just... just the airline, and..."
Bang. Bang. Bang.
The heavy wood of the loft door splintered as a reinforced kick smashed through the deadbolts. The door crashed inward, swinging violently against the white brick wall.
Three men stepped into the foyer. They weren't cops. They wore tactical black nylon vests, matte-black balaclavas, and carried suppressed tactical carbines held in a low-ready position.
Viktor Vance’s men.
My oldest, most ruthless rival in the Manhattan shipping cartels had finally made his move. He must have tracked Julie’s movements at the airport or had a mole inside Moretti Holdings watching my private terminal.
"Well, well, well," a raspy, cold voice echoed from the hallway as Viktor himself stepped past his gunmen, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive charcoal suit. "Dante Moretti. Always hiding in the romantic nooks of Brooklyn. And look what else you found... a lovely little family reunion."
Naomi screamed, pulling Lily down behind the kitchen island as Viktor’s men swept their weapons across the room.

My blood turned to liquid nitrogen.
"Viktor," I said, my voice completely devoid of human emotion as I drew my weapon, stepping directly in front of the kitchen island to shield Naomi and my daughter with my own body. "You just made the biggest mistake of your miserable life."
