Chapter 16 - The War CouncilThirty minutes later, the loft was transformed into a command center.

Marcus and four of my most elite operatives stood around the kitchen island, studying tactical schematics of the Red Hook shipping yards displayed on a digital tablet.
"He's walking you into a slaughterhouse, Boss," Marcus said, his voice laced with grim urgency. "Salvatore has at least fifty loyalists dug into those shipping containers. If you walk in there unarmed, you won't walk out."
"I have to go," I said flatly, sliding an extra magazine into my shoulder holster and checking the slide of my Sig Sauer.
"Dante, no!" Naomi burst into the room, her eyes flashing with a mixture of terror and white-hot fury. She grabbed my arm, her fingers digging into my jacket. "You heard him! It's a trap! If you go there alone, they will kill you, and then they will come for Lily!"
"If I don't go, they will come for Lily tonight," I replied, my voice breaking slightly as I looked down into her green eyes. I reached up, cupping her face with my hand, letting my thumb trace her cheekbone. "Naomi, listen to me. I built an empire on violence, and for five years I tried to pretend the blood on my hands didn't matter. But this debt belongs to me. It’s my bloodline they want. I will not let them touch our daughter."
Naomi’s lower lip trembled, a single tear escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek. "I didn't spend five years hiding from your world just to watch you walk into a firing squad."
"You aren't watching me die," I promised her, leaning down to press a fierce, desperate kiss against her lips. "You're watching me finish this once and for all."
I turned to Marcus. "Get Naomi and Lily to the safe house in the Hamptons. If I don't call you by sunrise tomorrow, you burn every asset we have left, put them on a private flight out of the country, and never look back."
"Boss—" Marcus started.
May you like
"That's an order, Marcus!" I roared, the full weight of the Moretti authority slamming down on the room.
Marcus swallowed hard and nodded. "Yes, sir."
