Chapter 4 - The Reckoning"Five years, Naomi," I said, my voice dangerously soft as I stepped past Julie and into the apartment, closing the heavy door behind me with a definitive click.

Naomi backed up against the kitchen counter, her hands gripping the edge of the marble so hard her fingertips turned white. She looked like a cornered animal, but beneath the absolute terror in her eyes burned a fierce, defiant fire that hadn't aged a single day.

"Don't you dare," she breathed, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Don't you dare walk into my home and use that tone with me."

"Mommy?"

Lily darted around my legs, running straight toward the kitchen island and throwing her arms around Naomi’s waist. Naomi dropped to her knees instantly, burying her face in Lily’s dark curls, her shoulders shaking as she pulled her daughter close enough to fuse their bodies together.

I stood there, watching the two most important people in my universe—people I didn't even know existed twenty-four hours ago—and felt a dark, possessive wave crash over me.

"You kept her from me," I said, stepping closer, my boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood. "You had my child, and you ran across the country to play independent artist while I spent years wondering why the hell you walked out of that hotel room."

Naomi stood up slowly, keeping Lily safely behind her skirt. When her gaze met mine, there were no tears—just pure, unadulterated venom.

"I ran because the night before we broke up, I saw your men drag a man bleeding into the alley behind our hotel," Naomi shouted, her voice echoing off the high industrial ceilings. "I ran because I saw the way men looked at you—like you owned their very breath. I realized that if I stayed, I would either end up dead in a ditch or raise a child who thought violence was a language!"

Her words hit me like a physical blow, knocking the wind straight out of my lungs.

"I gave you an out, Naomi," I snarled, closing the distance between us until I was towering over her. "I told you who I was from day one. You chose to stay. You don't get to unilaterally decide to erase me from my own flesh and blood because you got scared of my shadow!"

"Watch me," she whispered fiercely, staring right into my eyes without blinking. "She is my daughter. You signed away your right to a normal life the day you stepped into the Moretti syndicate."

"I never signed away my family."
