Chapter 13 - The Race Against the ClockI released the operative, letting him slump unceremoniously onto the stone walkway, and sprinted toward 72nd Street where our Maybach was idling with the engine running.

Naomi and Lily were already inside, shielded by Marcus’s second-in-command, David. When I wrenched the door open and climbed into the back seat, my chest was heaving, though I forced my expression to remain an unreadable mask of absolute calm for Lily's sake.
"Daddy, why are we running?" Lily asked, holding her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest, her silver-gray eyes wide with confusion.
"We're just playing a fast game, sweetie," I lied smoothly, pulling Naomi close to my side as the Maybach lurched forward into traffic, its tires squealing against the asphalt. "Daddy forgot something very important at home."
Naomi looked up at me, her green eyes piercing straight through my composure. "The loft?"
"Someone broke in," I whispered so softly Lily couldn't hear. "They left a tracker."
Naomi didn't scream. She didn't cry. She simply reached out, her fingers interlocking tightly with mine. "We survive this, Dante. Together. Just like we promised."
When the Maybach screamed to a halt outside the Brooklyn loft building three minutes later, the street was completely clear. No police sirens, no tactical vans—just eerie, unnatural silence.
I drew my Sig Sauer, checking the chamber before pushing the heavy glass door open. "Stay in the car with David," I ordered Naomi.

"Like hell I'm staying down here while you walk into a trap," she retorted, unbuckling her seatbelt with a fierce determination that reminded me why I fell in love with her in that Atlanta hotel room five years ago. "If there's a bomb or an assassin up there, I want to face it with you."
I didn't waste time arguing. I nodded once, and together we sprinted up the iron staircase, bursting through the shattered doorway of the loft.
