Chapter 10 - The Final Sunset

The line went dead with a soft click.
I stood in the quiet kitchen for a long, silent moment. Outside, the evening cicadas hummed their steady rhythm, and the warm summer breeze rustled through the tall oak trees surrounding the house.
I walked over to the hallway mirror, looking at the graying hair at my temples and the faint scar across my cheek. For fifteen years, I had tried to bury the warrior and become just a father. But the world doesn't let good men rest when monsters still walk the dark.
I walked down to the basement, opened a loose brick in the stone foundation, and pulled out a heavy, matte-black steel locking case. I popped the latches. Inside wasn't a satellite phone this time. It was a customized modular carbine, spare magazines, a tactical rig, and a encrypted thumb drive containing the complete operational blueprint of Shadow-Nine's European infrastructure.
Upstairs, the front door opened, and I heard Lily's cheerful voice echoing through the hallway.
"Dad? I'm home! I brought takeout Chinese!"
I closed the steel case, locked it with a sharp metallic snap, and walked back up the stairs into the warm, glowing light of the kitchen.
"Coming, sweetheart," I called out, wiping any trace of shadow from my face and replacing it with the warm, protective smile of a father who would gladly burn down empires just to keep his daughter safe.
