Chapter 2 - The Iron Wall Crumbles

Richard didn't even make it three steps past his pristine flower beds before the sky changed.
It wasn't a natural shift in weather. It was the synchronized, deafening roar of twin tactical heavy-lift helicopters clearing the tree line, their twin-rotor blades whipping up a blinding vortex of dust, gravel, and expensive patio furniture. The party guests dropped their plates. The laughter instantly died, replaced by shrill shrieks of panic as heavy military transport armor slammed into the asphalt of the private cul-de-sac.
"What the hell is this?" Richard muttered, his arrogant smirk instantly vanishing, replaced by a twitching panic in his left eye. He reached instinctively for his phone. "Dad! Call the governor—"
He didn't get to dial.
Before Richard could press a single digit, a heavy combat boot slammed onto his wrist, sending the expensive smartphone shattering against the concrete. Two federal marshals in unmarked matte-black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind reinforced visors and holding suppression-ready carbines, pinned Richard face-down into the dirt before he could draw breath.
"Richard Vance, you are under federal arrest for domestic terrorism, racketeering, human trafficking, and interstate conspiracy," shouted the lead tactical officer, his voice amplified by a digital comms unit.
From the porch, Richard’s mother shrieked, clutching her pearls as she waddled down the steps. "Do you know who we are?! My husband is friends with the Attorney General! Chief Miller! Arrest these thugs!"
Chief Miller, the local police chief who had been casually chewing on a rack of ribs just moments prior, stumbled out from the patio with grease on his chin and a badge awkwardly pinned to his belt. He pointed a trembling finger at the tactical commander. "Hey! You boys are out of your jurisdiction! This is Vance property—"
A third federal operative stepped forward, casually flipping open a leather-bound badge wallet that flashed the unmistakable gold seal of the Department of Justice’s Internal Affairs and Special Operations Division.

"Chief Ronald Miller," the agent said coldly, not even glancing at the local cop. "You are hereby relieved of duty and placed under arrest for obstruction of justice, bribery, and aiding a transnational criminal enterprise. Secure him."
Four more marshals swarmed the porch, grabbing Miller by both arms and shoving him against the brick wall before slapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists. The barbecue guests scattered like panicked sheep, only to find every exit of the estate sealed by a perimeter of armed federal agents.
