Chapter 7 - Ashes of the Dynasty

Within forty-eight hours, the Vance family empire dissolved like salt in water.

Financial institutions froze every asset associated with the family name. Federal regulators swooped in and seized their real estate holdings, corporate fronts, and offshore accounts. The local police department was placed under direct federal receivership, and Chief Miller along with twelve other corrupt officers were indicted on federal conspiracy charges.

National media outlets seized on the story with rabid fascination. THE FALL OF THE VANCE DYNASTY: HOW A FORMER BLACK-OPS OPERATIVE BROUGHT DOWN A CORRUPT POLITICAL DYNASTY. Headlines screamed across every major newspaper and news channel. Commentators debated how a single local domestic abuse case blew the lid off a multi-state criminal syndicate.

We were sitting on the wooden porch of our modest home—the very "lonely little house" Richard’s mother had mocked just days before. The sunset painted the distant hills in strokes of brilliant gold and fiery orange.

Lily was sitting in a rocking chair, sipping hot chamomile tea, her breathing deep and even, unhindered by fear or pain.

"Do you think they'll ever come back, Dad?" she asked softly, staring out at the empty gravel driveway.

"Nobody is coming back, sweetheart," I said, handing her a warm blanket. "And even if they tried, some doors are better left permanently closed."

She smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached her eyes for the first time in years. "Are you going to put the satellite phone away again?"

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the heavy metal device, and tossed it into an industrial metal incinerator sitting off to the side of the porch. I struck a match, dropped it inside, and watched as the flames quickly devoured the black plastic casing and internal circuits, turning the ultimate instrument of war into harmless ash.

"For good," I said.
