Chapter 5 - A Deal with the Devil

Senator Arthur Vance swallowed hard, desperately trying to regain his composure as he smoothed the lapels of his jacket. He glanced at the shattered wall safe, the blinking tactical servers, and the armed federal agents standing like stone statues around the room.

"Look," Arthur said, lowering his voice into a smooth, conspiratorial tone, stepping closer to the desk. "We are reasonable men. This... this is a domestic dispute that has gotten entirely out of hand. Richard is a hothead, yes, but he's young. We can settle this quietly. A multi-million dollar settlement transferred to any offshore account of your choosing. Complete anonymity. You and Lily can disappear to any beach in the world."

I didn't answer immediately. I walked slowly around the mahogany desk, stopping just inches from the powerful politician. I could smell the expensive cologne masking the stench of absolute corruption.

"You think this is about money, Arthur?" I asked quietly.

"Everything is about money and power," Arthur scoffed, regaining a sliver of his arrogant veneer. "And right now, you are standing in the way of a man who is about to control the Department of Justice. If you push this forward, my campaign will bury you. Judges will recuse themselves. Evidence will mysteriously vanish. You cannot fight the system from the outside."

"I'm not fighting the system from the outside," I replied, pulling the satellite phone from my pocket and tapping the screen. "I brought the system with me."

At that exact moment, the study door swung open again. Two federal marshals escorted a pale, trembling Richard Vance into the room, his hands cuffed behind his back. Behind him walked a senior DOJ prosecutor carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

"Senator Arthur Vance," the prosecutor announced loudly, holding up an official arrest warrant bearing a federal judge's wet signature. "You are being placed under arrest for high-level treason, racketeering, obstruction of federal investigations, and conspiracy to commit murder."

Arthur’s face turned the color of ash. "You can't do this! I have immunity! I have—"

"You have the right to remain silent," the prosecutor interrupted coldly as the marshals forced the Senator down and locked the steel cuffs around his wrists.
