Chapter 9 - The Second Vault

I didn't panic. Panic was a luxury reserved for amateurs.

Thirty seconds after reading the note, I was standing in front of a secure, offline tactical terminal I had secretly built into the floorboards beneath the kitchen island. I bypassed commercial networks, patched directly into an encrypted military satellite relay, and ran a deep-scan trace on the metadata of the paper and the ink composition.

The result popped up on the screen within seconds: Origin point—Geneva, Switzerland. Encryption key—Shadow-Nine.

Shadow-Nine.

The name hit me like a physical blow. Shadow-Nine wasn't part of the Vance family syndicate. They were an elite, privatized intelligence syndicate—a ruthless shadow-broker network that had funded corrupt politicians like Arthur Vance as puppets to manipulate American energy and trade policies from behind the scenes.

They didn't care that Richard was in prison. They didn't care that the local dynasty had fallen. What they cared about was the second vault—a hidden digital repository containing the identities of every corrupt global official, arms dealer, and corporate executive tied to their syndicate, which Arthur Vance had secretly backed up using my old operational cipher.

And whoever sent that note knew that I was the only person alive who could unlock it.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It was an unknown international caller ID.

I swiped to answer and pressed the phone to my ear.

"You're harder to kill than legend suggested, Commander," a smooth, cultured European voice whispered through the speaker. "You thought you rescued your daughter from a local monster. But you just stepped into a much larger cage."

May you like

"If you ever come within a hundred miles of my daughter again," I whispered back, my voice dripping with lethal calm, "there won't be a federal prison on earth capable of holding what’s left of you."

"Oh, it's not about your daughter anymore, my friend," the voice chuckled softly. "It's about you. We're coming for the cipher. And this time, nobody is going to answer your call."
