Chapter 19 - Epilogue — The Horizon


I poured two cups of fresh coffee, handing one to Lily as I took the seat beside her in the rocking chairs.
She looked up, taking the mug with a grateful smile. "Do you ever miss it, Dad? The action, the comms, the missions?"
I looked out at the horizon, where the sun was dipping below the ocean in a breathtaking blaze of gold and violet, leaving behind a tranquil, unending calm.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out a small, smooth stone I had picked up on the beach that morning, and tossed it gently into the sand.
"Never look back, sweetheart," I smiled, putting my arm around her shoulders as we watched the sun set on a brand-new day. "Some stories are meant to end so real life can finally begin."
