Chapter 11 - The Phantom Signal


The smell of garlic noodles and spring rolls filled the kitchen, instantly banishing the cold tactical dread that had lingered in my chest just moments before. Lily dropped her backpack on the counter, her eyes bright with the genuine, unburdened energy of a young woman who had finally reclaimed her life.
"You look serious, Dad," Lily noted, tilting her head as she unpacked the takeout boxes. "Everything okay with the federal follow-ups?"
"Just paperwork, sweetheart," I replied smoothly, slipping the encrypted thumb drive deep into my pocket before walking over to help her set the plates. "The prosecution is wrapping up their final briefs. You don't need to worry about any of it anymore."
"Good," she smiled, taking a seat. "Because I'm actually going on a weekend camping trip with some classmates next Friday. First time leaving the county since... well, you know."
A cold spike of adrenaline shot through my veins, but I forced my facial muscles to relax into an encouraging smile. "A camping trip sounds wonderful. Just send me your itinerary and check in every evening."
"Promise," she beamed.
Later that night, after Lily had gone upstairs to sleep, I slipped down to the basement. The warm domestic facade dropped away instantly, replaced by the razor-sharp focus of an operative preparing for war. I plugged the encrypted thumb drive from the manila envelope into my offline tactical terminal.
