Chapter 3 - The Vault of Secrets

"Clear the east wing! Secure the study!"

The tactical team moved through the sprawling Vance mansion with terrifying, clockwork precision. Every door was kicked open, every security camera was disabled, and every hard drive was ripped from its housing by cyber-warfare specialists who had dropped in with the initial assault wave.

I stood in the center of the grand foyer, holding a wet cloth as I gently wiped the dried blood from Lily’s forehead. She was conscious now, wrapped in a thermal emergency blanket provided by the medics.

"Dad..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "They... they said they would kill you if I ever told anyone. They said nobody would ever believe a broken girl."

"They were wrong, sweetheart," I murmured, kissing her hair while a quiet rage burned deep inside my chest. "They built their entire empire on the assumption that nobody would ever look close enough. But they invited the wrong monster into their house."

A tactical officer jogging down the grand mahogany staircase approached me, snapping a salute out of pure, instinctive military discipline before catching himself and lowering his hand.

"Sir, we’ve secured the primary study. You need to see this."

I handed Lily into the care of the senior paramedic. "Keep her stable. I'll be right back."

I followed the officer into Richard’s private office. It smelled of old leather, expensive cigars, and unmitigated corruption. Behind the massive mahogany desk, a hidden wall panel had been blown open using a localized thermal charge. Inside was not just a safe, but a full-scale server rack and dozens of leather-bound physical ledgers.

"Look at the data streams, sir," the cyber specialist said, tapping furiously on a ruggedized terminal. "This isn't just local domestic abuse or minor local bribes. This house is the central financial clearinghouse for an illegal weapons smuggling and human trafficking ring spanning three states. And look at who is listed as their primary silent partner."

My eyes scanned the digital spreadsheet on the screen. The name at the top wasn't just a corrupt local politician. It was Senator Arthur Vance—Richard’s uncle—who was currently leading a high-profile national campaign for the presidency.
