Chapter 8 - The Unseen Shadow

Three months passed in relative peace.

The criminal trials for Richard and Senator Arthur Vance were moving at lightning speed under the direct supervision of a federal anti-corruption task force. With the overwhelming mountain of digital evidence, physical ledgers, and Lily’s corroborated testimony, a plea deal was entirely off the table. The prosecution was pushing for maximum consecutive sentences.

Lily had returned to her university classes, surrounded by undercover federal security details that blended seamlessly into campus life. She was smiling, studying, and slowly reclaiming the bright future the Vances had tried so desperately to crush.

I stayed mostly at home, tending to the garden, chopping firewood, and enjoying the quiet simplicity of the life I had always wanted.

Until a plain manila envelope appeared in our mailbox.

There was no return address. No postal stamp. It had been hand-delivered by someone who knew the exact perimeter blind spots of our security cameras.

I sat at the kitchen table, slit the top of the envelope with a pocket knife, and pulled out a single sheet of heavy cream cardstock paper.

Printed across the center in stark, black typewriter font was a single sentence:

May you like

“You forgot to check the second vault in the Cayman Islands. And someone else now knows you're still alive.”

My blood turned instantly to ice.
