Chapter 10 - The Next AssignmentNight had fallen over Lakehaven, Ohio, casting deep shadows across the quiet, affluent suburbs.

A sleek black sedan idled quietly beneath the amber glow of a streetlamp two blocks away from the federal courthouse.

Marin opened the passenger door and slid into the leather seat.

In the driver’s seat sat a man in a tailored dark suit, wearing dark sunglasses despite the nocturnal hour. He handed her a fresh, unmarked manila folder.

“Good work in Ohio, Operative Kessler,” the driver said, his voice deep and measured. “The Syndicate’s accounts have been recovered, the assets redistributed to the victims, and the loose ends are tied up.”

Marin opened the manila folder. Inside was a single photograph of a bustling harbor in Marseille, France, alongside a new set of passport documents bearing a different name, a different profession, and a different city.

She glanced down at her right forearm. The small black crown with the broken point was hidden once again beneath her sleeve.

“What’s the next assignment?” Marin asked, her pale gray eyes reflecting the glow of the dashboard lights.

The driver smiled faintly.

“A new hospital in Boston, Agent Kessler. A prominent pharmaceutical CEO is hiding illegal offshore accounts behind a charitable medical foundation. They need a new head nurse.”

Marin closed the folder, adjusted her collar, and looked out the window as the sedan glided silently into the highway traffic, vanishing into the night like a ghost leaving no trace behind.
