Chapter 8 - The Empty ChairThree days later, Westbridge Memorial Hospital had returned to its normal, chaotic rhythm.

The media vans had finally cleared out from the front entrance. The story of Bertrand Callaway’s dramatic arrest and the collapse of his real estate empire dominated the front pages of every newspaper in the Midwest. Dominic Callaway was nowhere to be found, having fled the state after his trust funds were frozen by federal regulators.

Dr. Sarah Whitfield stood at the nurses' station, holding a stack of patient charts. She looked toward Room 412. It was empty now, awaiting its next occupant.

She turned to the head nurse.

“Where is Nurse Kessler?” Sarah asked, frowning. “She’s not on the schedule today.”

The head nurse looked up from her computer, blinking in confusion. “Nurse Kessler? Who are you talking about, Dr. Whitfield?”

“Marin Kessler. The nurse who worked here all week on the fourth floor.”

The head nurse laughed. “Doctor, you must be dreaming. We’ve never had a nurse named Marin Kessler on staff. Check the personnel roster. There’s no record of her employment, no tax forms, nothing.”

Sarah stared at her in disbelief. She rushed to the locker room, grabbed her phone, and opened her contacts. The number Marin had given her for emergency patient consultations was completely gone, replaced by an empty screen.

She hurried down to the fourth-floor breakroom and checked the bulletin board.

There, pinned to the corkboard beneath a coffee stain, was a small, ordinary business card. There was no name, no phone number, and no corporate logo.

Just a small, embossed black crown with one broken point.
