Chapter 4 - The Vanguard of the UnderworldThe silent alarm didn't ring at the front desk; it routed directly to a custom encryption app on Marin’s encrypted burner phone.

Vibration: Three short pulses. Sector 4 Parking Garage.

Marin didn't panic. She stood up smoothly, sliding the burner phone into her scrub pocket.

“Dr. Whitfield,” Marin said, her voice entirely devoid of fear. “I need you to lock yourself inside the medication room. Do not open the door for anyone until I return.”

“What? Why?” Sarah blinked, bewildered. “What’s happening?”

“Visitors,” Marin said simply. “Uninvited ones.”

Before Sarah could argue, Marin turned down the hall toward the service elevator.

Down in the concrete darkness of the subterranean parking garage, the three masked men moved with military precision. They were elite mercenaries hired by an old rival syndicate in Europe who had finally tracked Bertrand Callaway’s location. Their objective: eliminate Bertrand, recover the offshore ledger, and leave no survivors.

“Check the north stairwell,” whispered the leader, a scarred veteran named Viktor. “Clear every floor on the way up to Room 412. No witnesses.”

As Viktor stepped past a row of parked SUVs, a soft sound echoed from the shadows behind him—the rhythmic click of a ballpoint pen.

Viktor spun around, raising his suppressed rifle.

Standing beneath a flickering fluorescent bulb was Marin Kessler. She had draped a white lab coat over her scrubs, her hands resting casually in her pockets.

“You’re trespassing in a private healthcare facility,” Marin said, her voice echoing in the concrete cavern.

Viktor stared at her through the eyeholes of his tactical mask, laughing darkly. “Well, well. Looks like a stray nurse wandered into the slaughterhouse. Turn around and walk away, lady, and you might live to see sunrise.”

Marin tilted her head.

“I gave your employer a choice twenty years ago,” Marin said quietly. “Tell the Viper that his leash was getting too long.”

Viktor froze. The name Viper was whispered only in the deepest cells of the Eurasian underworld.

“You…” Viktor’s rifle shook slightly. “You’re the Broken Crown. You’re the ghost of Marseille.”

“Close,” Marin said. “I’m the executioner.”
