Chapter 12 - THE MASQUERADE AUCTIONThe annual charity gala at the Ritz-Carlton Charlotte was a glittering gathering of North Carolina’s wealthiest elite. Crystal chandeliers illuminated evening gowns and tailored tuxedos, but to my eyes, every shadow in that ballroom felt like a potential nest for an assassin's bullet.

I kept my hand locked around Grace’s, refusing to leave her side for a single second. Marcus and ten of our most elite tactical guards were stationed at every exit.
"Daniel, you're so tense," Grace whispered gently, her warm hand rubbing my back. "Is something wrong?"
"Nothing to worry about, sweetheart," I offered a reassuring smile, kissing her temple. "Just some minor friction regarding the port contracts."
At nine o'clock sharp, the auctioneer stepped onto the stage to open bidding on an 18th-century oil painting. But before the opening bid could be called, every light in the grand ballroom plunged into pitch darkness. Screams of panic rippled through the crowd.
"Stay down!" I barked, pulling Grace tightly into my chest while drawing my concealed Glock 19.
Emergency red backup lights flickered on, casting a eerie glow over the room. On the main stage, the auctioneer was gone. Standing in his place was a tall, imposing man in a tailored black tuxedo. He carried my features, but his cold gray eyes and the jagged scar across his face gave him a terrifying, demonic presence.
Victor Whitfield.
"Good evening, Charlotte!" Victor called out into the microphone, his voice echoing across the darkened hall. "Apologies for crashing such a sophisticated affair. But I am here to collect a blood debt."
He pointed a gloved finger straight at me. "Daniel Whitfield—the man you praise as a legitimate titan of industry—is a fraud! He and our late father robbed me of my birthright and buried me in an overseas hellhole!"
Gasps broke out among the high-society guests as cell phone cameras flashed incessantly.
"Victor, end this circus now!" I stepped forward, shielding Grace with my body. "What do you want?"
"I want a war," Victor grinned, his eyes burning with unhinged madness. "A war played by true Whitfield rules. Within 72 hours, I will dismantle your entire enterprise piece by piece. And when you lose, I will claim your mansion, your syndicate, and... your sweet new wife."
He held up a small remote detonator. "And just so you know I'm not making empty threats..."

BOOM!
A deafening explosion rocked the hotel foundation from the parking structure outside. My private Rolls-Royce erupted into a roaring fireball, shattering the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the ballroom. Amidst the screams and total chaos, Victor blew a kiss toward us and vanished into the smoke alongside six armed men clad in black.
