Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW OF ATLANTAThe threat wasn't over.

We gathered in the war room in the basement. Marcus had analyzed the steel box—inside was a single chess piece: a black King, cracked directly down the middle, with a bullet casing jammed into the base.
"It’s the signature of Alexander Kane," Marcus said, his voice grave.
I felt a cold chill run through the room. Alexander Kane was a ghost in the Southern underworld. A billionaire venture capitalist by day, and the undisputed shadow kingpin of the entire Eastern Seaboard by night. Julian Vance hadn't been an independent player; he was merely Kane's regional manager. By taking down Vance and absorbing his assets, I had unknowingly declared war on the most dangerous man in the country.
"Kane doesn't play games like Vance," Marcus warned. "He doesn't send fiances or fake maids. He uses military-grade contractors, economic warfare, and political leverage. He will try to freeze your bank accounts by sunrise."
"Let him try," I said coldly. "We've spent six months legitimizing our holdings. My funds are tied up in federally backed bonds and domestic real estate. He can't touch my capital without exposing himself."
"Daniel," Grace’s voice echoed from the doorway.
She had followed us downstairs. Her face was pale, but her eyes held an intense, unwavering determination.
"Grace, go back upstairs with Lily," I said gently. "This isn't your battle."
"It is my battle!" she stepped into the room, looking at the tactical maps spread across the table. "You protected my daughter and me when we had nothing. I'm not running away now just because things are getting hard again."
She walked over to the table and picked up the cracked chess piece.
"Alexander Kane has a weakness," Grace said suddenly.
Marcus and I both stared at her in utter disbelief.
"What are you talking about, Grace?" I asked.
Grace breathed in deeply. "Before I came to work for you... five years ago, my ex-husband worked as a low-level accountant for Kane's primary holding company in Atlanta. That's how my ex-husband died—he found an off-book ledger detailing Kane’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and Kane’s men killed him to keep him quiet. I fled to Charlotte with Lily under a maiden name to hide from them."
The entire room went dead silent.
The pieces instantly clicked together in my head. Grace wasn't just a random maid I had hired two years ago. Her presence in my life wasn't an accident of fate—it was the central point around which this entire war revolved.

"Grace..." I whispered, shocked. "You have the ledger?"
"I don't have the paper," Grace said, reaching into her neck collar to pull out a small silver locket she always wore. She unclasped it, revealing a micro-SD card hidden behind a photo of young Lily. "I have the digital backup my husband gave me before he died."
