Chapter 28 - THE FOUR BILLION DOLLAR BURDENThe biometric scanner flared with a deep, pulsing crimson light.

"Biometric signature recognized: Whitfield, Daniel. Genetic match: 99.8%. Accessing Sovereign Reserve."
A heavy mechanical clunk echoed deep within the mountain bedrock, followed by the hiss of high-pressure hydraulic seals releasing. The ten-inch-thick titanium vault door rotated slowly counter-clockwise, swinging open with a heavy, ancient groan.
Inside Vault 108 lay no golden coins or stacks of hundred-dollar bills.
It was a cold, clinical server sanctuary. In the center of the room sat a single, pedestal-mounted titanium briefcase connected to three fiber-optic satellite arrays. This was the dark-money heart of The Crown—four billion dollars in decentralized, untraceable digital sovereign bonds, capable of funding small wars or bankrupting national economies with a single stroke of a key.
Vane stared into the room, his eyes wide with fanatical greed despite his broken body. "There it is..." he whispered, coughing up blood. "The ultimate power... Daniel... split it with me... we can buy whole countries..."
I looked at the glowing briefcase, then down at my own blood covering my hands.
This four billion dollars was the reason my father was murdered. It was the reason Victor became a psychotic monster. It was the reason Vanessa lied, Julian fell, and Victoria betrayed her badge. It was a cancer that consumed every human soul that came near it.
"Marcus," I said quietly, turning to my loyal friend who was standing guard at the catwalk entrance.
"Yeah, Boss?" Marcus asked, wiping sweat and gunpowder from his forehead.
"Is the satellite uplink on Victoria’s command unit still active?"
"Active and connected to the federal taskforce primary network in D.C.," Marcus confirmed.
I walked into the vault, unhooked the main fiber-optic line from the titanium briefcase, and plugged it directly into Victoria’s federal transceiver unit.
Vane’s eyes widened in sheer horror as he realized what I was doing. "No... NO! Daniel, what are you doing?! That's four billion dollars! You're throwing away absolute power!"
"I don't want power, Vane," I said, my voice cold and steady as I initiated the global broadcast transfer protocol. "I want peace."
I pressed the transfer execute button.
"Initiating complete liquidation transfer to the International Red Cross, Global Children's Medical Relief, and Federal Crime Victims Compensation Fund. Processing..."
Across the world, in real-time, four billion dollars dissolved out of the shadow markets and was distributed across tens of thousands of legitimate humanitarian accounts, permanently erasing the dark reserve of the Whitfield bloodline forever.
Vane let out a blood-curdling shriek of agony, as if the loss of the money was a physical wound that tore his soul apart. He collapsed onto the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.

I pulled the fiber-optic cable out, throwing it onto the cold floor.
The Whitfield curse was broken.
