Chapter 18 - THE CROWN'S BLOOD COMPACTNews of my upcoming press conference sent shockwaves through the highest corridors of global power. The Crown—a syndicate that had operated from the shadows for decades—was not going to let me destroy them without a fight.

Four hours before the broadcast, an unexpected guest arrived at the gates of my estate.
Senator Richard Sterling—one of the most powerful politicians in Washington and an old friend of my father—walked into my study.
"Daniel, you are making a catastrophic mistake," Sterling began without greeting me. "Do you have any idea what The Crown controls? Energy markets, elections, global trade routes! Your father sacrificed everything to earn our family a seat at that table!"
"And it killed him," I replied coldly, pouring a glass of water. "I have no interest in your world, Senator."
Sterling laughed bitterly. "You think you can just step down? You think releasing a few files buys you a clean slate? If you air that data, you, your wife, that little girl, and anyone who carries your name will be hunted to the ends of the earth!"
He pulled a document from his leather briefcase and slid it across the table. "Sign this non-disclosure agreement. Hand over the master drive to me, and I will personally guarantee five hundred million dollars in a private Swiss account, along with new identities in New Zealand. You can live like royalty."
I picked up the multi-million-dollar agreement, looked at it, and then looked at the framed photo of Grace and Lily on my desk.
Slowly, deliberately, I tore the agreement into tiny pieces and let them flutter to the floor.

"You don't understand me at all, Sterling," I said quietly. "I bled on the marble floor of this house, and it taught me what actually matters. Your money means nothing to me."
Sterling’s face turned crimson as he stood up, pointing a finger at me. "You will regret this before the sun sets, Whitfield!"
