Chapter 5 - THE AMBUSH AT WILMINGTONWith Vanessa secured in our underground holding facility beneath the Charlotte warehouse, we turned our attention to Julian Vance. He believed his surprise raid on my freight lines was still set for Friday night at the Wilmington Port.

He didn't know we were controlling Vanessa’s phone.
On Thursday morning, Marcus used Vanessa’s encrypted messenger to send Vance a message: "Whitfield is dead. Overdose confirmed. His men are scattered in confusion. The Wilmington port is unguarded tonight. Move your entire shipment in now to seize the territory before his lieutenants can organize."
Vance took the bait hook, line, and sinker.
At 1:00 AM on Friday night, a convoy of four black armoring SUVs pulled into the desolate, fog-covered Wilmington shipping container yard. The air smelled of salt water and diesel fuel.
Julian Vance stepped out of the lead SUV, surrounded by ten heavily armed enforcers. He was wearing a tailor-made wool coat, lighting a cigar as he looked around at the towering metal containers.
"Beautiful," Vance smirked, exhaling a plume of white smoke into the cold air. "Daniel Whitfield’s legacy ends tonight. Spread out, secure the main office, and—"
Suddenly, giant industrial floodlights atop six surrounding shipping containers snapped on simultaneously, bathing the yard in blinding white light.
"Drop your weapons! Port Security and Whitfield Tactical! You are completely surrounded!" a megaphone roared.
Vance’s face twisted in horror. "It’s a trap! Get back in the trucks!"
Before his men could reach their doors, the side walls of three nearby shipping containers dropped with thunderous metallic crashes. Out stepped thirty of my men, fully armored, weapons raised, backed by local law enforcement commanders whom I had put on my payroll long before Vance ever thought of leaving Atlanta.
Vance’s men dropped their guns instantly, throwing their hands into the air.
Vance stood alone in the center of the yard, his cigar dropping onto the wet asphalt.
I walked out from behind a steel container, flanked by Marcus.
"Julian Vance," I said, my voice carrying over the hum of the distant ocean waves. "Welcome to North Carolina."
Vance’s eyes darted around frantically. "Whitfield... you were supposed to be dead! Vanessa said—"
"Vanessa is currently enjoying my hospitality in Charlotte," I interrupted smoothly. "And you... you made the fatal mistake of thinking a businessman in a suit forgot how to be a monster."
Within minutes, Vance was zip-tied and loaded into the back of my armored van. His entire Atlanta distribution empire was dismantled in a single hour without a single shot fired from his men.

As we drove back to Charlotte, Marcus looked at me from the front passenger seat. "What do we do with Vance and Vanessa, Boss? Throw them in the river?"
I looked out the window at the passing highway lights. "No. Death is too quick for people who betray trust. I have a much better punishment in mind."
