Chapter 9 - THE SIEGE OF CHARLOTTEThe revelation changed everything. Alexander Kane hadn't sent Vance to Charlotte just to take my freight lines—he was searching for Grace and the micro-SD card that could put him in federal prison for the rest of his life. Vance had used Vanessa to infiltrate my house because they suspected the missing accountant's widow was working in my estate.

"They don't know I've figured it out yet," I said, my mind racing at lightspeed. "Kane thinks he holds all the cards."
"What’s the plan, Boss?" Marcus asked, his hand hovering over his holster.
"We strike first," I declared. "We don't wait for Kane’s mercenaries to arrive in Charlotte. We lure Kane out into the open."
Using Grace’s encrypted micro-SD card, our IT team leaked a tiny, un-redacted snippet of Kane’s illegal Cayman transaction logs to the Department of Justice and three national investigative journalists. Within two hours, Kane’s corporate stock began to plunge on Wall Street.
Panic set in for the shadow kingpin.
At 4:00 PM, my private line rang. It was an unlisted Atlanta number.
I answered and put it on speaker. "Daniel Whitfield."
"You're playing a very dangerous game, Whitfield," a calm, deep, cultured voice rasped through the speaker. Alexander Kane. "You have something that belongs to me. Return the girl and the drive, and I will allow you to keep your life and your Charlotte territory."
"You're in no position to negotiate, Kane," I replied, leaning over the table. "In twelve hours, the full contents of this drive will be broadcast to every federal agency in North America. Your empire is over."
"Then I'll destroy everything you love before sunrise," Kane hissed, his composure breaking into raw, murderous fury. "I'm already in Charlotte."
The call disconnected.
"He's here," Marcus yelled, slamming his hand on the table. "All teams, set defensive perimeter! Lock down the perimeter gates!"
Outside, the evening sky turned dark red. A sudden blast echoed from the front of the estate—Kane’s strike team had used explosives to breach the main security gates. Three heavy black armored trucks roared up the long winding driveway, smashing through our outer security posts.
Gunfire erupted across the grand front lawn.
"Grace, get down to the panic room with Lily now!" I shouted, pulling a heavy tactical pistol from my desk drawer.
"No, Daniel! Come with us!" she cried, grabbing my coat.
"I have to end this tonight, Grace," I said, holding her face in my hands, looking deeply into her eyes. "If I go into that room, he'll burn this house down on top of us. I'm stopping him here."
I kissed her—a hard, passionate, desperate kiss that conveyed everything I had been too proud to say for the last six months.
"Wait for me," I whispered.

She nodded through her tears, grabbing Lily and sprinting down the armored hallway toward the underground vault.
I racked the slide of my pistol, turned to Marcus, and stepped out into the hallway as the front glass doors of the mansion shattered under a hail of heavy gunfire.
