Chapter 29 - THE RETURN TO VERMONTThree days later.

The news of the "Geneva Vault Disruption" dominated global financial headlines. The mysterious liquidation of four billion dollars from an un-indexed Swiss reserve shocked the international banking community, triggering federal investigations that led to the arrests of over thirty high-profile figures across Europe and America, including Henrik Vane and Victoria Vance.

The Whitfield name was mentioned one final time in the press as a closed historical file.

I sat in the back of a private medical transport van driving through the winding mountain roads of Vermont. My side was heavily bandaged from the knife wound, and my left arm was in a sling, but my heart felt lighter than it had in fifteen years.

Marcus was driving. He looked at me through the rearview mirror with a rare, genuine smile.

"Where to now, Boss?" Marcus asked.

"Home, Marcus," I replied, looking out at the autumn leaves painting the Vermont hills in brilliant shades of red and gold. "And don't call me Boss anymore. You're part of this family now. You're staying at the farm."

Marcus chuckled, nodding slowly. "I think I can handle some woodworking."

The van turned down the familiar dirt driveway. The sun was setting, casting a warm, amber glow across our small wooden farmhouse.

As the vehicle stopped, the front door opened.

Grace stepped out onto the porch, clutching a warm shawl around her shoulders. Beside her, Lily came running down the wooden steps, her laughter ringing out across the quiet yard.

I pushed the van door open and stepped out onto the cool Vermont earth.

"DADDY!" Lily shrieked, sprinting across the grass and throwing her tiny arms around my waist.

I winced slightly from the pain in my ribs, but I picked her up anyway, burying my face in her hair. "Hey there, little princess."

Grace walked down the steps slowly, her eyes brimming with tears. She didn't look at my bandages, nor did she ask about Switzerland or the money. She simply stepped into my arms, resting her head against my chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of my heart.

May you like

"You came back," she whispered, her voice filled with a peace that no amount of money in the world could ever buy.

"I promised you I would, Grace," I whispered back, kissing her softly under the twilight sky. "It's finally over. Truly over."
