Chapter 3 - THE DOUBLE GAMEOver the next two weeks, the tension inside the Whitfield manor became suffocating. To Vanessa, I acted like a man recovering from a brain injury—slow, slightly forgetful, and increasingly dependent on her to manage my daily routine.

"Daniel, sweetie," Vanessa said one evening over dinner, pouring a glass of vintage Cabernet for me. "You've been so stressed since the fall. Marcus told me you have that big freight negotiation with the Wilmington Port Authority on Friday. Why don't you let me review the route distribution files for you? You need rest."

"I don't know, Vanessa," I slurred slightly, rubbing my temple as if experiencing a surge of pain. "Those routes... they're sensitive. My late father built those connections."

"I am going to be your wife in six weeks, Daniel," she coaxed, reaching across the table to lay her soft hand over mine. "Your empire is my empire. Let me help you carry the burden."

"All right," I feigned hesitation, nodding slowly. "The digital keys are in the floor safe in my private office. The code is... well, I wrote it down in my desk drawer."

That night at 2:00 AM, the security cameras in my study recorded Vanessa slipping into the room wearing a black silk robe. She opened the desk drawer, retrieved the notebook, and opened the floor safe. She pulled out a black USB drive containing what she believed were the complete GPS coordinates, law enforcement bribe schedules, and shipment timetables for my Carolina freight corridors.

What she didn't know was that the USB drive contained a customized trojan virus created by my IT specialist. The moment she inserted that drive into her private laptop to upload the files to Julian Vance, our team gained complete access to Vance’s encrypted network in Atlanta.

The next morning, Marcus brought me a tablet in the basement command post.

"We're in, Boss," Marcus smiled grimly. "We intercepted an encrypted message sent from Vance’s terminal ten minutes ago."

I read the text on the screen: "Target has taken the bait. Whitfield is incapacitated from the fall. The Wilmington shipment moves Friday at midnight. Intercept the trucks and execute Whitfield's perimeter guards. We take the Carolinas this weekend."

I laughed—a dark, harsh sound that echoed off the concrete walls.

"They think I'm a wounded lion," I said, turning to Marcus. "Let's show them what happens when you step into a lion's den."

Just then, my phone buzzed. It was a text message from Grace.

"Mr. Whitfield, Miss Cole just made a private phone call from the garden. She ordered two armed men to meet her at the estate gates tonight at midnight. She told them to 'dispose of the staff' before the main strike on Friday."

My heart stopped. She wasn't just coming for my business—she was going to murder Grace, Lily, and my loyal house employees to leave no witnesses.

"Marcus," I growled, my eyes narrowing into slits of pure steel. "Cancel Friday's plan. The war starts tonight."
