Chapter 14 - The Foundation of Honor

The sun broke through the heavy spring clouds, casting a warm, golden beam across the kitchen floor.
"What does this mean for us?" I asked, my hands resting flat against the marble counter.
"It means you and little Tristan are financially secure for the rest of your lives," Elizabeth smiled warmly. "More than that, the Pentagon is formally posthumously awarding Tristan the Silver Star for extraordinary valor in the line of duty next month. The ceremony will be held right here in Colorado Springs."
A wave of immense pride washed over me, chasing away the cold shadows of the past months.
"I want to use the trust funds to build something permanent," I said firmly. "A transition housing center for military widows and single mothers who have nowhere to go when the government stipends run out. A place where no one is ever told to sleep in a garage."

Elizabeth’s face lit up with a brilliant, fierce smile. "Tristan would have loved that. In fact, consider the land acquisition and federal permits approved. My legal team will draw up the papers by Monday."
As Elizabeth packed her briefcase and prepared to leave, I walked out onto the front porch, watching the maple tree sway gently in the afternoon breeze. The roots were deep, the branches were strong, and nothing could ever shake them.
