Chapter 20 - The Horizon Ahead

The fire crackled softly, casting dancing shadows across the high-beamed ceiling of the living room.

I looked down at little Tristan, whose heavy eyelids were already fluttering shut as the rhythmic sound of my voice lulled him into a deep, peaceful sleep.

Elizabeth looked up from her book, catching my eye with a warm, knowing smile.

"He has his father’s eyes," Elizabeth whispered softly.

"And his stubborn streak," I added with a quiet chuckle.

We both turned our gaze toward the front window, where the snow continued to fall in gentle, hypnotic flakes, blanketing the front yard and the sturdy roots of the maple tree outside.
