Chapter 22 - An Unexpected Invitation

A week after the anniversary celebration, a formal, cream-colored envelope arrived in our daily mail.
It bore no return address, but the postmark indicated it had been mailed from a small suburb three hours north of Denver. Inside was a handwritten note on plain stationery.
“Charlotte,
I don't expect you to reply, and I certainly don't expect you to forgive us. But your father wanted you to know that he has retired from his firm, and we have sold our home to help pay down some of Gregory’s legal debts. We see your name in the papers often, and we want you to know how deeply proud we are of the mother and leader you have become. We are sorry—for everything.
—Mom and Dad.”
I stared at the letter for a long time, turning it over in my hands. The anger that had once burned like acid in my chest was gone, replaced by a quiet, steady numbness.
Elizabeth walked into the kitchen, noticing the paper in my hand. "Trouble?"
May you like
"No," I replied softly, sliding the letter back into its envelope and placing it in a drawer. "Just a chapter that's finally finished."
Elizabeth nodded approvingly. "Some stories don't need a sequel, Charlotte. They just need an ending."
