Chapter 15 - The Silver Star Ceremony

The sun beat down warmly on the immaculate lawns of the Fort Carson military base, where rows of crisp uniforms, polished medals, and fluttering American flags framed a grand outdoor stage.

The bleachers were packed with high-ranking officers, service members, and local dignitaries.

I sat in the front row, wearing a simple, elegant navy dress, holding three-month-old Tristan Junior in my arms. He was dressed in a tiny white romper, sleeping peacefully against my chest, completely unaware of the historic weight of the moment.

General Elizabeth Vance stepped up to the podium, her three-star insignia gleaming in the bright Colorado sunlight.

"We gather today not just to mourn a loss, but to honor an unyielding spirit," Elizabeth’s voice boomed through the PA system, carrying across the parade ground with absolute clarity. "Major Tristan Vance gave his life defending the core tenets of this nation—honor, truth, and the protection of the innocent."

She paused, her eyes sweeping over the crowd before landing directly on me and my baby.

"Tristan’s greatest legacy is not written in classified files or operational commendations," she continued, her voice softening with deep emotion. "It is embodied by the woman who carried his memory through the darkest winters, and the child who will grow up knowing that his father fought so that others might live in safety."

The crowd erupted into a thunderous, rolling standing ovation.

As General Elizabeth descended the stage, walked over to my seat, and gently pinned the shimmering Silver Star medal to the lapel of my dress, a quiet, profound sense of closure finally settled over my heart.

The ghosts of my family's betrayal were gone. Only honor remained.
