Chapter 18 - Evening on the Mountain

The sun began to dip behind the jagged peaks of the Rocky Mountains, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of crimson, purple, and gold.

I drove back up the winding suburban road toward our home, the familiar silhouette of the house standing tall against the twilight.

The maple tree Tristan had planted years ago was now bursting with vibrant autumn foliage, its branches sweeping gracefully over the driveway.

I parked the car, unbuckled little Tristan from his car seat, and carried him up the front steps on my hip. The house smelled faintly of cinnamon and roasted apples—a comforting, domestic aroma that had nothing to do with holiday pretense or forced family gatherings.

Elizabeth was already inside, sitting at the kitchen island reviewing blueprints for the sanctuary’s second phase expansion.

"You're late, mom," Elizabeth joked without looking up from her papers. "The toddler union is demanding dinner right now."

I laughed, setting little Tristan down on the rug where he immediately scrambled toward a wooden toy truck his uncle had carved for him before deploying.

"I had a visitor," I said, walking over to pour myself a cup of tea.

Elizabeth looked up, her interest piqued. "Who? Not your father again?"

"No. Amanda Cole. Brought the final bankruptcy papers for Gregory and Priscilla."

Elizabeth smiled, leaning back in her chair. "Well. Let that be a lesson to anyone who thinks they can evict a Vance from her own home."

We both laughed, sharing a quiet, unspoken understanding that bridged the gap between sorrow and absolute triumph.
