Chapter 19 - The Unbroken Circle

Winter returned to Colorado Springs with a vengeance a month later, blanketing the Rockies in heavy, pristine white snow.

Unlike the previous year, when the cold brought isolation and despair, this winter felt warm, vibrant, and full of life.

The Vance Family Sanctuary was operating at full capacity, housing dozens of mothers and children who spent their evenings in a warm, brightly lit dining hall instead of freezing in garages.

On a quiet Friday night, little Tristan—now walking, talking, and constantly exploring—waddled into the kitchen holding a picture book, tugging at the hem of my sweater.

"Read, Mama," he babbled, holding up a brightly illustrated story about brave knights and soaring mountains.

I scooped him up into my arms, settling into the comfortable rocking chair by the living room fireplace. Elizabeth sat nearby, reading a historical biography, while the soft glow of Christmas lights illuminated the tree in the corner.

There were no empty chairs at our table. No toxic relatives manipulating our boundaries. No secrets hiding in the shadows.

I opened the book, my voice soft and steady as I began to read.
