Chapter 8 - The Convoy Departs

By 1:15 PM, the transformation of the driveway was complete.

Two large suitcases belonging to my parents and Priscilla were stacked neatly by the front steps. Gregory had been transferred from the military police custody into the back of a local sheriff's patrol cruiser that had arrived to serve the secondary civil eviction notice.

Priscilla slammed the door of her luxury SUV so hard I thought the glass would shatter, burning rubber as she peeled out of the cul-de-sac, spraying dirty slush across the curb. My parents followed closely behind in their sedan, refusing to look out their windows as they drove past.

The street fell eerily quiet once more.

The snow continued to drift down in soft, gentle flakes, blanketing the maple tree Tristan had planted by the driveway.

The military transport vehicles idled quietly by the curb.

General Elizabeth Vance walked back up the front steps, removing her peaked cap and running a hand through her short, dark hair. She stepped into the foyer, looking around the spacious, sunlit living room with a long, exhausted sigh.

"Well," Elizabeth said, offering a small, weary smile. "That cleared out the riffraff."

I walked over to her, wrapping my arms around her waist in a tight, grateful hug. "Thank you, Elizabeth. I don't know what I would have done if your transport hadn't hit the county line when it did."

"I told Tristan before his final deployment that I would always watch your six," Elizabeth murmured, resting her chin softly on my head. "He made me promise. Even if he couldn't be here to enforce it himself."

We walked back into the kitchen together. The pine candles were still burning, filling the air with a clean, crisp fragrance.

Elizabeth reached into her briefcase and pulled out a thick manila envelope, sliding it across the kitchen island toward me.

"What's this?" I asked, opening the flap.

"Tristan's final operational commendation," Elizabeth said softly. "And the full, unredacted insurance settlement papers. The Department of Defense has officially designated this property as an active veteran memorial estate. Your mortgage is not only paid in full for the rest of your life, but the federal government will match every maintenance cost to ensure this house remains exactly the way Tristan built it."

I looked down at the documents, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes—not tears of sorrow or defeat, but of profound, unshakeable peace.
